On the Anniversary of the Death of Umm al-Banin (a)
O mother of ʿAbbas, ever since al-Taff, when there fell
his two hands, his mouth has not quenched its thirst from a palm
The blood of the two arms: the delta of a river of epic,
whose course, every day, al-Taff restores
Had the waterskin of al-ʿAbbas not been seen pouring out,
the arrow of death and the eye would not have worn him down
He asked of Allah no reward in the love of them
except that his relatives might be safe on the day of al-Taff
O mother of ʿAbbas, nothing resembles it:
a hand whose fingertips Allah has inscribed
Fingers of glory; its palm is the deed of generosity,
and his two hands are a surah of noble ayahs
A sea of fidelity; even were the ink for him
seas of his ink, it would not have rendered him his due
In plumbing his meaning our odes have been left bewildered,
and the secret lies in a milk that nourished him with virtue
